why we’re crushing…

he has the cutest smile ever, so we can’t help but think he’s crazy adorable. he is also an Olympian and Olympian = hot. and the thing we love about him most is his fierce motivation and determination. it hasn’t even been half a year since he had a horrible accident on the track where he cut his leg open with his skate… and here he is already winning Olympic medals. amazing.

his story…

he was born in Monterey, California, but grew up in Federal Way, Washington where his brother skated with Apolo Ohno. he later got into speed skating himself, and moved back to Cali with his brother to get the best possible training. he attended school at Lakewood High School, and graduated with high honors in the Merit Scholars Program. he plans to start attending college at the University of California, Berkeley. so he’s a jock and he’s smart .

his inspiration…

this boy is seriously living out his dream. he was inspired to get into short track speed skating when he saw Apolo Ohno win his gold medal in 2002, and now he is not only friends with the guy, but he is racing with him at the world class level. when he was watching Apolo win, he asked himself, “Why can’t I do that?”… and so now he is. we totally love that he decided he wanted to create something in his life and then went and did it without any doubt. we love the idea of not only having a hero, but becoming one yourself.

the injury…

having experienced broken bones, dislocations, muscle tears, and other injuries ourselves, we are completely blown away by what he has done. it was just in September that J.R. crashed in a race, and sliced his leg to the bone with his own skate. he dived head first into rehab and was back on the ice only 60 days after the injury. knowing how hard injuries can be to come back from physically, and mentally, we can hardly believe it! here it is only 5 months later like the injury barely phased him, and he is kicking but at the Olympics.

the Olympian…

in Vancouver he won a bronze medal in the men’s 1500 meters race right behind Apolo. he’s totally just getting started, and we can’t wait to see him at the next Winter Olympics, and watch him continue to become a superstar.
