why we're inspired...

we love it for 2 major reasons... first of all, it empowers teens to do something. almost every middle class teen has 1 pair of jeans they don't really wear that could be an amazing gift to someone. it's not asking teens to give money they don't have, or time they may not be motivated enough to spend. it's something within almost every teen's power to give. it's also teens giving to teens, which inspires teens to care about other teens instead of judging, hating, bullying, or projecting negative energy onto each other.

second, it brings awareness to an easily forgotten group in need. it is estimated that between 1.6 and 1.7 million people under 18 will experience homelessness each year. the reasons for their situation ranges from running away, escaping abuse, pregnancy, and neglect, to mental illness, and failed foster care. many people don't realize how many of these kids truly had no other choice. even if they did have some choice, they are still valuable, and worthy of love and hope. we were completely unaware of how massively common this problem is, but this movement is bringing light to these young people who are so easily lost in the night.

Teens for Jeans FAQ...

We love this movement and want to accurately spread the word, so here are the 'Teens for Jeans' FAQ from the Do Something Website...

» When I donate jeans, where do they go?

In light of the recent earthquake in Haiti, the first 100,000 jeans collected will be sent down to Haiti to support homeless teens and Aéropostale has agreed to match that donation with another 100,000 pairs of brand new jeans.

In addition, DoSomething.org and Aéropostale have partnered with over 600 homeless shelters across the US and Canada to support homeless teens right in our own backyards.

» If I donate more than one pair of jeans, do I get more than one coupon?

Yes. When you donate your jeans at Aéropostale, you will receive one 25% coupon for each pair of jeans that you donate.

» What sizes of jeans are you looking for?

Homeless shelters often have a greater need for large sizes, but we will be happy to accept jeans of all sizes for this campaign. All of the jeans should be in good condition.

» Is Aéropostale accepting other clothes besides jeans?

For the current Teens for Jeans campaign, we are just collecting jeans. If you have extra coats, scarves, hats, shirts, etc. please donate them directly to your local homeless shelter or charity.

» Do you have posters or materials to help promote the campaign?

Yes. Please check out www.DoSomething.org and you will see posters available for download.

» Does every Aéropostale store participate in this campaign?

Yes. Every Aéropostale store will be accepting jeans donations from January 19th through February 14th.

» Does it matter what brand of jeans I donate?

Nope. We want to collect as many jeans as possible! All we ask is that they are in good condition.

» How are Justin Long and Ashley Greene involved in the campaign?

Justin Long and Ashley Greene are the spokespeople for Teens for Jeans 2010. They both really care about teen homelessness and activating young people to get involved.

They generously donated their time to shoot a public service announcement and join the campaign.

» If I'm a shelter that wants to be involved as a jeans beneficiary, what do I do?

Please send an email to TeensforJeans@dosomething.org and we will get back to you about participating in next year's campaign.

» What if my question isn't answered here?

Just e-mail your question to TeensforJeans@dosomething.org!
