You Mustn’t Be Afraid To Dream A Little Bigger, Darling
Choosing Your Own Beliefs And Dreaming Bigger
we believe that we’re all born knowing that anything is possible, but then as we grow up, the world around us gradually imposes limitations on us, and our imaginations slowly conform to the boxes other people have created.
most of us inherit our beliefs from the people who raise us. from the get go, we’re told what we’re supposed to believe about things… like religion, morals, money, and "what’s important in life". …and as other’s pass knowledge onto us, our own inner truth can sometimes get lost along the way.
the parent trap...
the ways that "dis-belief" enters our minds can be subtle... it's normal for little kids to question, to ask "why?", and so many times, they are met with responses like "because that's just how it is". most people tend to think "their" beliefs are what everyone else should believe, so parents often tell children what they are "supposed" to believe, with the intent to keep them close to their own thinking - and sadly, sometimes that thinking creates an extremely restricted view of life.
we are not parents of course haha, but we still think it's a bummer that so many people view children as "their property". we believe that parents are people who are given the opportunity to guide young souls on their journey through this world, and we wish more parents chose to allow children to live their own truth.
dreaming bigger...
but no matter what you were "allowed" to believe growing up, you always have the power to choose what you want to believe now. you can think beyond the limits you were given, you can explore ideas you were never allowed to explore, you can choose a new direction, you can have more hope, you can feel more love, you can let your imagination break free from the things you were told aren't possible.
don't let anyone else hold you back in life from what you want to think, feel, and believe is possible... and always remember that you mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.
Wow, it’s really strange that I came across this. I found your blog because your site came up when I was looking for stuff about The Lumineers song. I randomly read this post and it couldn’t be more relevant to my life. This is a little personal, but, this post just makes me feel like you guys get me a little. My family was very religious, and my dad was abusive growing up and my mom always allowed it, and they would quote the Bible to almost like say he was supposed to treat us that way because he was “The leader of the family”, and we needed to obey him. I moved out last year and moved in with a friend and her family is so different then mine. There is no way anyone in her family would ever allow abuse much less justify it. It’s been the biggest year of my life because I’m being exposed to this entirely new way of thinking. Before, I never knew any different because in my family that’s just the way it was. This post made me cry because it’s exactly what I’m feeling. I’m learning that the pain and negative thigns I was taught are not what I have to live by. Like you guys said, I’m breaking free and dreaming bigger for myself.
wow, this made US cry. we could never explain how much we relate to this. we are so thankful you found a new place to be, and people to show you love and support. you’re the exact kind of girl we wrote this thinking about. if the way people treat you feels wrong to you, whether or not they say it’s “allowed”, you know in your heart what is right and wrong and what you do and don’t deserve. never let anyone hold you down… and keep breaking free and dreaming bigger <3
